Sports Presentation Evening 2017

We held our 8th Annual Sports Presentation Evening in July.  

All students in Years 7-10 who have represented the school at a sport attended the evening, including family members.

This year our guest speaker was former athlete triple jumper and athlete mentor for Sky Sports Living for Sport - Vernon Samuels.

For each sports team a person was awarded Player Of The Year, Players Player Of The Year or Most Improved Player Of The Year.

French Residential 2017
Every year we organise a 5 day trip to Normandy in the north of France.  We leave Barnstaple really early and travel by bus to Portsmouth where we catch a ferry to Caen in Northern France.  From there we have about a 20 minute journey to the youth centre which becomes our home for the next 4 nights.  Students sleep in dorms on bunk beds in rooms of between 4 and 8 people (they decide who they will share their rooms with.)  The centre has a lovely outdoor area where students are free to...

The department offers two trips to Spain for students to maximise their learning outside the classroom.

Year 8 Barcelona Trip 2017
The department offers two trips to Spain for students to maximise their learning outside the classroom. 
Year 8 are given the chance to visit Cataluña in July. Highlights include a visit to the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Camp Nou (Barcelona football stadium) and shopping on Las Ramblas. The trip is a fantastic chance for students to practice their Spanish and experience the vibrant culture of Barcelona. The trip runs yearly. 
London Expressive Art Trip 2017

Nothing could dampen the spirits of our Year 10 Expressive Arts students this year as they ventured into London for a weekend of culture. Fifty-seven students from the Art, Photography, Music and Drama departments threw themselves into an action packed itinerary. The activities involved visits to The National Portrait Gallery, Tate Modern, The Saatchi Gallery, Borough Market, Camden Market and a Drama workshop at Pineapple Studios, not forgetting, the London Eye!

Simon Hall inspired our Year 10s

On Thursday 8th June 2017 the BBC’s Crime Correspondent and author Simon Hall came in to give an inspirational talk to all year 10 students about journalism.  It was a pleasure to meet him and we were all delighted that he took the time out of his busy schedule to talk to our students. 

His insights and advice have been really well received by those in attendance and will make a significant difference to their futures.

Qualified as a Swimming Teacher

Year 11 student Emily Bousted have recently passed and qualified as Level 2 Swimming Teacher with the Swimming Teachers Association. She has also qualified as a YMCA Mermaids UK Swim Instructor and is one of a handful of people in the UK to gain this status. Congratulations Emily

Year 8 Art / Photography Trip 2017

For the second year running, we have taken our Year 8 Able, Gifted and Talented students into Barnstaple to sample the creative delights of our town. Their day involved a drawing activity in the Museum of North Devon, Photography in the Pannier Market, Watercolour Painting on the River Taw and a visit to the fabulous White Moose Gallery on Trinity Street.

Well done - Year 7 Girls Football Team

Having been undefeated so far this year and winning the North Devon Final so convincingly, we had high hopes for the County Finals in Newton Abbot. We also knew however that we would be up against some of the best schools in Devon and that it wasn't going to be easy, especially having to play without our captain.

All girls played incredibly well on what was a very hot day and managed to stay unbeaten against the 7 schools they faced.

Ten Tors 2017 Success

The Park Community School 45 mile Ten Tors team had a successful event with the whole team completing route U at 12:16 on Sunday. There were a few blisters but a great sense of achievement for them all. This is the fastest complete 45 mile team in recent memory, a superb effort by the team. The weather over the Ten Tors weekend was perfect walking conditions, Saturday was dry, cloudy with a little wind to cool them down and clear, warm and sunny on Sunday for the finish.

The year 8 and year 10 cricket teams played Pilton on Tuesday 2nd May

Both teams won their matches. Year 10s won by 5 runs and Year 8s just scraped through winning by 1 run.
Their next match will be against Ilfracombe College.
Gymnastics Success for Park!

On Saturday 25th March, 41 gymnasts represented Park School at the North Devon Schools Gymnastics Competition, held at Falcons Academy. The gymnasts worked so hard in the lead up to the yearly competition and their efforts and dedication absolutely paid off!

Double Rugby Champions 2017

Park School boys team are Double Champions and ready to represent North Devon in the County Semi Finals.

Park School continue to impress in 2016-2017 by winning the under 14s and under 15s North Devon Schools Cups. With the under 14s beating Braunton 23-19 and the under 15s beating Shebbear 26-22 in two fantastic Finals. Both teams will now go on to represent North Devon in the Semi Finals of the Devon Cup.

Indoor Athletics 2017

The year 8 mixed team came 2nd in the North Devon competition, which meant they travelled to Plymouth Life Centre in February to represent North Devon in the County Championships. Out of sixteen teams they came a very creditable 10th. They came up against some outstanding athletes. All the team produced their best performances, particularly Millie Ayres and Rupert Pocock who both came 2nd in the six lap run.

North Devon U14 Girls Football Champions

This is the second year in a row this team of girls have become North Devon Champions.

This year they were unbeaten in their pool, beating South Molton, Chulmleigh and Great Torrington, scoring an impressive 38 goals and only conceding 1 throughout the 9 games played.

U12 N Devon Schools Girls Football Champions

On Wednesday the 22nd of March Park’s U12 Girls Football Team took part in a friendly tournament which also included the North Devon Schools Final against the winners of the other pool Ilfracombe. The first match for Park was against GTS, a school they had already beaten in the pool stages. GTS put up a good fight but Park came out on top winning 2-1. The next friendly was against Pilton. Well done to the U13’s and the U15’s Girls’ Rugby team. Both teams went to Topsham RFC to represent North Devon on 1st March 2017.

The U13’s had a lot of fresh faces to rugby this year and for most of them, this was their second taste of the game. Year 7 Art trip to Exeter 2017

On Wednesday 1st March 2017. Year 7 braved the miserable weather as they embraced the cultural delights of the city. The students responded to the iconic Japanese landscapes created by the printmaker Hiroshige. This was followed by a visit to the World Cultures section where the students created a set of drawings in their sketchbooks.

U15 girls’ netball team are the North Devon Champions!

On Wednesday 22nd February 2017, the North Devon Schools Year 10 Netball tournament took place at Bideford School.

Well done to the year 10 girls who have played some outstanding netball this year. The squad of 11 managed to defeat all teams they met in the tournament, displaying excellent skills and team work. Laura Comer in 10 KH successfully got through the regional round of future chef this week at Petroc and has now got through to the South West heat to be held in Dorset in April.

North Devon Indoor Athletics final

Year 8 competed at the North Devon Indoor Athletics Final at the North Devon Leisure Centre on Thursday 19th January with 5 other schools Events included 4 lap run, 2 lap run, standing long jump, vertical jump, shot put, speed bounce and relay.  The team came 2nd overall and will join Braunton School at the Devon finals in Plymouth on February 23rd.

Large Foodbank Donation

The Park Community School launched a reverse advent calendar to raise awareness and gain donations for Northern Devon Foodbank. Teachers presented facts and information to students to explain how Foodbank helps the local community. Then each day of December two students from every tutor group donated much needed items of food.

Paralympic Athlete visits Park

David Hill who competed in the Paratriathalon in the Rio Paralympic Games spent the day at our school on Monday 12th December.

Students took part in several Paralympic sports including goalball and boccia with David as part of the Sky Sports Living for Sport Project.

David linked his sporting success to the ‘6 Keys to Success’ and asked students to think about these and apply to themselves.

Rising Stars Programme

Rising Stars kicked off its programme for our KS3 Gifted & Talented PE students. The programme looks at different aspects of fitness in detail, with the first session focusing on Core Stability/Strength. Throughout this series of sessions we look at how each individual sports can benefit from a variety of training methods, and in turn give them the opportunity to perform at a higher level. Our A team have been crowned North Devon U14 Netball Champions!

On Wednesday 2nd November 2016, Park Community School competed in the North Devon U14’s Netball Tournament. Both our A and B team were outstanding and won their respective competitions. The A team defeated 5 schools in their pool before going on to beat Bideford in the semi-final and then Pilton 20-6 in the final!

Broomhill Art Trip 2017

The Art and Photography trip to Broomhill proved to be a great day out for all. The rain held off as our students participated in a range of activities in the gallery and sculpture garden.

The photographer and artists will use the results from this day to build a coursework unit which will go towards their GCSE grade. The students on both of the days were, as usual, a credit to the school.

South West BMX Champion

Congratulations to Year 10 student Harrison Pascoe-White who last weekend won the South West BMX Racing Championships in the 14 year old category. Harrison races nationally and shows great dedication to the sport.  Over the years he has struggled with some nasty injuries, but his resilience has not deterred him from continuing in an olympic sport he loves.  Harrison put in a great deal of training for the Championship, which resulted in him racing amazingly on the day, with a sensational...

North Devon U16 Champions For 3rd Year!

On Tuesday 4th October, Park Community School competed against Ilfracombe School in the North Devon U16’s Football final.  After going 2 - 1 down Samir Kanj scored a spectacular 25 yard effort to take the game into extra time, Ilfracombe then forged into a 3-2 lead, but the boys battled on bravely and Owen Cox scored the equaliser with a fine solo run and with two minutes left on the clock James Andrews scored the winning goal.

Congratulations To Our Talented School Choir

We are thrilled to annouce that on Thursday 6th October the school choir competed in the finals of the LaLa Choirs Devon School Choir Competition in Exeter. Competing against Devonport High School for Girls and Teignmouth Community School.

Park School travelled to Downside School in Radstock, Somerset to take part in the English Schools Cross Country for the first time on Wednesday 5th October.
