Sports Day 2015

On Wednesday 24th June, we held our annual Sports Day event, it was a great day of athletics - some really exciting races, records broken and the weather was lovely! All in all a fantastic sports day. Overall Kingsley House were the winners, despite Drake winning Inter boys, Inter girls and Junior boys . Sports Presentation Evening 2015

The Park Community School PE department held their 5th annual Sports Presentation Evening in July.  Special guest was former pupil Jack Hutchens who was an outstanding middle distance/cross country runner at school (still holding 3 sports day records).  At the moment he is ranked 57th in the country at the 3K steeplechase and just about to start focusing on being a triathlete.

Taiko Festival

Students performed at the UK Taiko Festival on Fri 3rd July to a packed out Northcott Theatre at Exeter University. Their coach Gill Ashcroft was very proud of their performance and had been working with them since May on their 5 minute piece. The Park School Taiko group have named themselves 'Koen', which is Japanese for 'Park'. Carnegie Shadowing

On the 18th June, a group of our Year 8 and 9 students were fortunate enough to attend the Carnegie Shadowing event at Bideford College with English teacher Ms Keates. Our students came fourth place - missing third place by a mere one point. This was despite a technical hitch.

Governors' Tea June 2015

On a warm June afternoon, parents joined us for tea and cake at this term’s Governors’ Tea.  Mike Canham, Chair of Governors and Martin Penny, his Vice Chair, presented the certificates and badges announced by each Head of House.  We learned something of each student’s favourite subjects, their teachers and what they liked best about the school!  All was hosted by Mrs Robins in her usual inimitable style!

Ten Tors 2015

Congratulations goes to the Park School 35 mile Ten Tors team who finished at 12:39 on 10th May, after a fantastic effort to finish as a complete team. This was an amazing result as throughout the training they had never walked this quickly.

The team members were Sarah Williams, Nicola Dunkin, Cyra Braunton, Heather Warner, Lily Dunkley and Louis Perron.

North Devon Schools Athletics Championships 2015

Wednesday 13th May saw an impressive display of talent from Park School compete in the North Devon Schools Athletics Championships at the Braunton Athletics Track. Not only was the sun out for us but we had the winning bug as well!

UKMT Regional Maths Challenge

On Wednesday 22nd April 2015, Andrew Morgan 9MR, Jonas Hackney-Davies 9LC, Joanne Roper 8DA and Hadeel Abed 8KV competed in the Regional UKMT Maths Challenge held at the Guildhall in Plymouth.  The regional challenge consisted of four separate rounds where students had to solve mathematical puzzles on a range of different topics in a set time limit.

Continued Rugby Success

We continue to achieve fantastic results on the rugby field this season, with more success at the finals night at Barnstaple RFC last Wednesday. 

The year 7’s won the u12s North Devon competition, beating Pilton 6 scores to 4 in the final.

The year 8s did fantastically well to reach the final, and were leading until the last minute against a strong Braunton School, who scored with the last play to snatch the game away from Park 17-12.

Tutor Group 7LK Accelerated Reader Challenge Winners

At the beginning of this half term period a challenge was set for all year 7 students enrolled on the Accelerated Reader Programme to read fiction books and complete a quiz, to test their knowledge and understanding of the contents of that particular book. The tutor group who have passed the most quizzes within this time scale are 7LK! They all win a prize of Easter Eggs! Well done to you all! Year 10/11 Gifted & Talented Art Trip

On Saturday 21st March, 14 of our Gifted & Talented GCSE students attended a very insightful art workshop at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter on Saturday. We all travelled down to Exeter on the train with little appreciation for what was in store for us. An incredible experience lay ahead as we were introduced to a collection of artwork which brought together History, Medicine and Art.

Students had a great time performing in Battle of the bands last week during lunchtime. Students from 7MS also sold cakes and other sweet treats to raise money for Kingsley House Charity. Over £50 was raised in total.

On Monday 18th March Year 9 students took part in a Technology Challenge day organised by Mr Rowe and his colleagues.  Rising to our Design and Technology problem solving challenge of transporting an egg, in tutor groups they built innovative and creative contraptions similar to Wallace and Gromit's cracking inventions.

On Tuesday 17th March, the North Devon Schools Year 7 Netball tournament took place.  The tournament consists of an 'A' and 'B' tournament with 8-12 schools entered for both tournaments.

Students Jasmine Turner and Summer Madge (year 7), Jack Freeman (year 8) and Charlotte Freeman (year 10) make up part of "The Solution" team that train at The Unlimited Dance Company.

Rugby is known for its rough and tough action and girls rugby is no exception!  10 of our Year 7 & 8's took part in the U13's Girls Rugby Festival on the 28th January.  The weather conditions were horrendous but it had been cancelled once before and we were determined to play some rugby!

Congratulations to our Athletics team on winning the North Devon Championships at the Leisure Centre on Thursday 22nd January 2015. The team are now preparing for the next round of County Championships at the LIFE centre in Plymouth later this month. 

Year 10 are ND Schools Football Champions!

Wednesday the 26th of November was an important night for The Park School in the North Devon Schools Cup Final against local rivals, Pilton Community College. It was a cracking game that led to a 3-2 win for Park although we got off to a bad start with an own goal (not mentioning any names!). Jack Rice pulled it level with a stunning 25 yard free kick that slotted into the top right hand corner leaving the Pilton goalie flat footed.

A very happy Year 9 Football team! Year 9 are ND Schools Football Champions!

Our Year 9 Boys Football team are delighted to be the North Devon Schools football champions - the match was a '6 GOAL THRILLER' final.

On Tuesday 18th November the team played Pilton in the final at Bideford college. In a re-run of last years final - which Pilton luckily won 2-1, Park opened the scoring when Owen Cox ran on to a long through ball and slotted it past the keeper. Pilton drew level to make it 1-1 at half time.

Shakespeare Schools Festival Event

We are extremely excited to be a part of this year’s Shakespeare Schools Festival, a nationally run festival that offers local schools the opportunity to perform Shakespeare plays in their local theatres.

Our performance of ‘The Comedy of Errors’ will be performed at The Queen’s Theatre, Barnstaple on Monday 3rd November 2014 at 7pm and we are hoping for as much support as possible from our school community.

Business Trip to Thorpe Park

The Business Studies department took 45 Year 10 students to Thorpe Park on 10th October. The purpose of the trip was to investigate a leisure attraction as a business. Students attended a 45 minute talk about “Thorpe Park as a Business”. This was followed by a question and answer session where students were able to explore the change of ownership of the Merlin Group to becoming a PLC.

An Inspirational Maths trip of a lifetime

38 Park Community School students in Years 8 to 11 have travelled to New York for an exciting educational adventure with the Mathematics department.

On a sunny weekend in July, 63 Expressive Arts students spent three amazing days in London. This enrichment experience always provides our students with many fond memories which will last a long time.

Once in Fortescue, always in Fortescue!

Last year former Park Community student Jack Bale, aged 18, who currently holds the title of Junior Male 3P British Rifle shooting Champion, contacted Park School to ask if there was any possibility of helping him fundraise to help cover training, travelling and equipment costs. Jack shoots 10m air rifle and .22 rifle at 50m for Great Britain Junior Squad and TENS Academy and hopes to bring home a gold medal from the Olympics in 2020 in Japan. In the last week of the summer term, the MFL department took 44 pupils to Normandy in France for 5 days where we had an amazing time!  We left really early on the Monday morning and caught a ferry over to Normandy from where we had a short drive to the accommodation.  We love staying where we stay as we have our own building and the dorm rooms are light and comfortable.
